Also, explore Kakum National Park - a 360km² rainforest with about 600 butterfly species & Ghana's iconic canopy walkway (built 1994)

Elmina Castle

If the slave dungeon walls of Ghana could talk, could you bear to listen? Your first stop brings you to the historic Elmina Castle. Built in 1482 by Portuguese traders, is a place where echoes of the past reverberate through its walls. Explore the castle's fascinating history and learn about the lives of those who walked these corridors centuries ago. Horror lurked in every corner – from the condemned cell to the grim male and female dungeons topped ironically by the Church of England. You'll experience the forbidding "palaver hall" where slaves were sorted and branded with hot metals. You get to witness the door of no return, and some forts in yonder.

Cape Coast Castle

Journey to the renowned Cape Coast Castle built in 1653, where even more history awaits. This castle was the main historical hub, where slaves were kept before they were loaded onto ships and sold in the Americas/ Caribbean through the Gate of No Return. If you are of black slave descent, there is a strong possibility your ancestors left Africa here. Discover the dark past of this iconic fortress and the role it played in the transatlantic slave trade. Explore the Kakum National Park, known for its lush rainforest and thrilling canopy walkway. Traverse the treetops and immerse yourself in the natural wonders of the park. Also, embark on a nature walk in a 360 kmsq regenerated rain forest at Kakum containing a wide range of nocturnal animals and insects with about 600 butterfly species and offers pleasurable birdwatching. Explore its 7 suspended bridges built in 1994. It has the highest point of a little over 130ft above ground level.
